In the last fifteen years modelling tools have evolved from models that simulate one crop for a fraction of a year to integrated modelling approaches that model crop sequences at various input levels. The 1st symposium on Modelling Cropping Systems held in Lleida during 1999 has shown a variety of approaches and activities on going in the field of modelling cropping systems, but it also showed the need to go beyond the stage of prototyping, given the increasing demand for model applications in scenario analysis. This 2nd symposium is aimed at presenting and discussing approaches for process simulation in cropping systems
modelling. A special emphasis will be given to the integration and comparison of such approaches, and to the techniques to develop and maintain cropping systems models.
The symposium will take place in Florence, organized by IATA-CNR, on July 16-18, 2001. See the important dates of the symposium. During September 2000 web pages will be made accessible to provide details about the symposium organization, the summary submission, etc.
There will be four sessions:
1) "Approaches for Process Simulation"
2) "Model Parametrization and Testing"
3) "Model Application and Development"
4) "Software Development and Demonstration"
Each day there will be poster and software demonstration sessions.
The proceedings will be published using the ESA proceedings format (two pages camera-ready). Both a hard copy and a CD-ROM will be given to each participant containing all the abstracts and the software made available by participants.
Abstracts are required also for the session Software Demonstration.
A selection of papers will be published in one or two dedicated
issues of the European Journal of Agronomy, Elsevier. The
selection will be made during the symposium by the members of
the Advisory Board, the Scientific Secretariat, and the
Scientific Committee.

in continuo e veloce mutamento.

mesi. I valori registrati in Toscana
generalmente inferiori rispetto a quelle remote.
riassunto i meccanismi vegetali di risposta all’ozono a livello molecolare.
fungino causando cambiamenti metabolici simili a quelli conseguenti
A livello
molecolare, l’ozono altera i complessi proteine-
l’uso a fini chemotassonomici. Gli isoprenoidi sono estremamente
reattivi e in presenza di composti antropogenici (soprattutto ossidi
di azoto) formano ozono e contribuiscono indirettamente all’accumulo
isoprenoidi coi composti antropogenici.
già negli spazi intercellulari impedendo all’ozono di raggiungere i
recettori.
chambers e catalogati.
Sintomi
automaticamente un danno fisiologico all’intera pianta, grazie a
risposta diminuisce all’aumentare dell’esposizione; a fine stagione,
sensibili e tolleranti. L’uso di cloni a diversa sensibilità
all’ozono (es: Populus deltoides x maximowiczii Eridano, sensibile, e
arboree (Populus tremuloides, Fraxinus americana e F. pennsylvanica).
purchè siano ottemperati alcuni presupposti: corretta identificazione
via il rilievo dei sintomi visibili ozone-like nelle aree CON.ECO.FOR.
aree CON.ECO.FOR. distribuite lungo tutto il territorio nazionale.
Questi
Paolo Cherubini
I sintomi
sono stati poi verificati come causati dall’ozono tramite studi in
open top chambers appositamente impiantate a Lattecaldo, presso
Morbio (Chiasso, Canton Ticino), utilizzando l’aria naturalmente
inquinata dell’ambiente circostante.
contributi a convegni, interviste a televisioni e radio locali e nazionali, articoli su giornali locali e
recentemente nominato ICP-Forests Regional Validation Centre for
Central Europe for the assessment of visual ozone injury e Lattecaldo
Gran parte
nell’ambito dell’International Cooperative Programme on Crops (ICP-
esperimenti in open top chambers e camere chiuse, e biomonitoraggio
con trifoglio bianco. I principali risultati evidenziano alti livelli
i propri consumi.

EDDY COVARIANCE FLUX MEASUREMENTS IN PONDEROSA PINE ECOSYSTEMS
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate position at
the Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. The successful candidate
will work with Mike Unsworth (Atmospheric Sciences) and Beverly Law (Forest
Science) in a research project on the influence of climate, age, and
management on CO2, water and energy exchange in semi-arid ponderosa pine
ecosystems of central Oregon. We seek a person with experience in the
theory and practice of eddy covariance flux measurements to take
responsibility for the flux and microclimate measurements as part of a
multidisciplinary, multi-institutional team working this project.
Our micrometeorological and biological research in an old-growth ponderosa
pine forest began in 1996, making it one of the earliest sites in the
AMERIFLUX program. It has expanded to include similar studies in a
re-establishing young forest and a mid-aged forest a few miles away.
Through a combination of eddy covariance methods, soil and plant chambers,
sap-flow gauges, root observation tubes, soil water measurements and stable
isotope analyses we, and our collaborators, are exploring the interacting
carbon and water cycles at these sites. The observational program is
closely tied to model development, and to projects designed to scale from
site to landscapes and regions. For further details see www.fsl.orst.edu/metolius/
The position requires a commitment to field work, most intensively between
about April and October, but with some field responsibilities year-round.
For example, the eddy covariance instrumentation, on 47m and 20m towers,
requires regular attention for maintenance and calibration. Most of the
necessary instruments and software to collect and analyze data are already
operational, but there is scope for further development. We seek a person
with a strong background in boundary-layer meteorology who will have
responsibilities for deploying and maintaining micrometeorological and
climatological instruments in the field, analyzing the resulting data, and
interpreting these data with respect to micrometeorological and ecological
theory. Experience in instrumentation, data management and analysis, and
the ability to write programs in S-plus or other high-level data analysis
software is desirable. The position requires a Ph.D. or equivalent
experience.

Tropical forests sustain a wealth of biodiversity, provide a wide range of
ecosystem services and products, and support livelihoods for millions of
people. Tropical forest conservation is highly complex, not only because
these forests perform so many different functions, but also because of the
variety of stakeholders involved. Since less than ten percent of the
world's tropical forests are likely to be preserved as legally protected
areas, conservation of the remaining ninety percent will depend on the
ability of stakeholders to make the products and services these "working
forests" provide appear competitive with alternative land use
options. This conference was conceived as a vehicle for identifying
opportunities to make that happen, and obstacles that successful efforts

IUFRO Symposium will be organized on the occasion of the 195th anniversary of the establishment of forestry education in Slovakia and the
50th anniversary of the College of Forestry and Wood Technology in Zvolen, the predecessor of the Technical University in
Zvolen.
The aim of the Symposium is to create a forum to present recent advances in population and evolutionary genetics of forest tree species. In
the period of the last ten years significant development in the application of molecular markers in population genetics, not only in the
investigation of gene diversity and differentiation in tree populations, but also in the processes running on the population level (e.g. mating
system, gene flow, etc.), has been recorded. They enabled also better understanding of evolution and phylogeny of tree species. Recent
years opened also new possiblities in genomics, gene mapping and identifying of quantitative trait loci.

1. The response of northern forest ecosystems and their processes to changing climate - ref nr 412-
· The idea will be to use the new LPJ models including more realistic carbon and nitrogen responses and the SWECLIM regional climate model outputs for the future. This project involves developing the ecosystem model LPJ GUESS to include an active nitrogen cycle and then applying this new module in Swedish forests along with climate change scenarios from
SWECLIM. It will also be necessary to move from modelling at the Plant Functional Type level to species level for European species. Future possible developments include climate model linkage or grazing, migration modelling depending on student interest. Applicants should be biologists (e.g. ecologists,
geoecologists, plant physiologists) or environmentalists with a background in computer programming (FORTRAN, C++ are a strong advantage).
2. Exotic Plant invasions: Deleterious Effects on Mediterranean island Ecosystems – ref nr 413 -
· To simulate the longer-term consequences of invasion on vulnerable ecosystems. To assess the feasibility and efficacy of different management strategies to control invasion. To predict invasion and ecosystem vulnerability under different future climate scenarios. The idea is to use LPJ GUESS ecosystem model developing it to include Mediterranean Plant Functional Types e.g. shrubs, cacti etc. and then to simulate Mediterranean island ecosystems with and without invaders and see the effects on ecosystem processes. Applicants should be biologists (e.g. ecologists,
geoecologists, plant physiologists) or environmentalists with a background in computer programming (FORTRAN, C++ are a strong advantage). This work will be performed within the framework of the
EU-project EPIDEMIE.
3. Prediction of Regional Scenarios and uncertainties for defining European Climate change risk and Effects – ref nr 414 -
· Using the LPJ-GUESS ecosystem model to first compare model predictions for European forests and their carbon and water fluxes to actual data from EUROFLUX sites and along with selected forest inventory sites in present day climates. Then using a number of different Regional climate models (developed within different EU countries) outputs including a full range of anomalies and SRES scenarios and their climate predictions for 2071-2100 to predict a range of possible future responses in these forests along with a comparison of the regional climate models. Applicants should be biologists (e.g. ecologists,
geoecologists, plant physiologists) or environmentalists with a background in computer programming (FORTRAN, C++ are a strong advantage). Model development will be required. This work will be performed within the framework of the
EU-project PRUDENCE.
4. Modelling of regional carbon balance in a boreal landscape – ref nr 415 -
· The main task for this position will be meso-scale modeling of carbon dioxide exchange in a boreal landscape using an existing model (RAMS). One of the tasks will be improvement and validation of a surface sub-model for evaporation, photosynthesis, and carbon exchange. A background in physical geography or meteorology or related subjects with good knowledge in physics and mathematics and some experience in computer programming (FORTRAN, C++) is required. The research will be performed in the context of the EU project RECAB and the candidate will work in a small team where also flux measurements with towers and aircrafts will be performed.
5. Carbon balance of northern boreal ecosystems under past, present and future climates –ref nr 416 -
· The PhD studentship, will draw on the expertise for supervision from Physical geographers,
Biogeochemists, Plant ecologists and Quaternary geologists available at the new upcoming Centre for Studies of Geobiosphere Dynamics. The PhD programme will focus on measuring and modelling the carbon balance of northern boreal ecosystems past, present and under future climate change scenarios. Dependent on the background and interests of the successful candidate the project may be directed towards utilizing information from existing experimental sites and a combination of readily available datasets on ecosystem-atmosphere carbon exchange, new experiments, stratigraphic and chronological studies in peatbogs to determine past accumulation rates and hydrologic changes and modeling of the controlling factors on past and future variations in carbon accumulation rates. Candidates must have obtained a B.Sc. or equivalent (preferably a M. Sc.) in Biology/Biogeochemistry, Ecology or Earth Sciences (with emphasis on Physical Geography or Quaternary Geology). Preference will be given to those with experience of some of the methods mentioned above and ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals.
A PhD research studentship can be established either as a stipendium ”utbildningsbidrag” or as a research student position ”doktorandtjänst” . The Department decides on which alternative to use. A stipendium “utbildningsbidrag” can be converted later (after 18 months fulltime) to a research student position. Information on the conditions for a stipendium “ utbildningsbidrag” för PhD students can be found in SFS 1995:938 and 1998:81. Information on the conditions for research student positions “doktorandtjänster” can be found in HF 5 kap 1-6§§ and SFS 1998:80.
A person taking up a PhD studentship will only be appointed to undertake research education. Assessment for the position will be based principally on the extent the person is seen to be able to profit from research education.
In addition to the time that she/he devotes to research education, the occupant of the position may be asked to perform work concerned with education, research and administration according to the special conditions in the regulations.
The Faculty of Science is trying to achieve equality in gender distribution in research education. At present more research students in the faculty are men, so the faculty encourages applications from female applicants for these positions.
Applications including the reference number, accompanied by a curriculum vitae, copies of certificates and other information the applicant wishes to provide should be sent to the University of Lund, Faculty of Science. They should be sent to the Registrar, Kansli MN, University of Lund, Box 118, 221 00 LUND, Sweden to arrive NO LATER than 17 AUGUST 2001. All documents should be certified.

2nd International Conference: New Trends in Water and Environmental Engineering for Safety and Life: Eco-Compatible Solutions for Aquatic Environments
Sender: Capri2002

Dear Madame, dear Sir,
please find hereby attached the 2nd Announcement and Call for abstract of the 2nd International Conference "New Trends in Water and Environmental Engineering for Safety and
Life: Eco-Compatible Solutions for Aquatic Environments" that will be held in Capri (Italy), 24-28 June 2002.
For more and updated info, including abstract format, please visit the website: www.capri2002.com
The Conference is supposed to be very interesting for any specialist working on water issues and hydraulic protection of the territory. It is organised under the auspices of prominent International
Associations, with the main aim to have a forum of scientists, representatives from the technical world and decision makers to discuss in a real interdisciplinary frame all issues related to the hydraulic
protection of the territory and management of water resources.
The importance of this meeting is self evident. In fact nowadays the study of environment does not raise questions. It has entered our culture in more ways than one, fundamentally affecting our decision
making process and planning and causing the development of new analytical, social and legislative instruments.
Despite the indisputable value of environmental studies there are still in place many frustrating boundaries between particular aspects of environmental sciences. In practice the interdisciplinary study of
environment as a whole is sometimes neglected, and exchange of information on land and water protection are far from ideal.
In part, this is due to different approaches to the same problem, to varying scientific/technical languages used by some scientists who came to study the environment from distinct scientific cultures and
to a high degree of specialization imposed by modern instruments. Inevitably this results, at times, in a narrow vision, while the solutions of complex environmental problems require a wider view, and at
the same time a refined and specific knowledge and command of experimental and observational equipment. The difficulties should be addressed by optimizing the coordination of still disperse
environmental community. As a cause/effect we shall be assisting in the birth and development of a new and self contained discipline: the environment. A discipline where it is difficult to define
boundaries and where the objectives are sometimes multipurpose, and even too contradictory and difficult to pose in a rigorous manner, is too often abused by some to become void of practical meaning.
With no intention of creating a new discipline, but with the aim of furnishing more value and power to our own skills as applied to the environment, the 1st and the 2nd International Conferences-New
Trends in Water and Environmental Engineering for Safety and Life: Eco-Compatible Solution for Aquatic Environment have been organized.
Capri 2002 is, together with Capri 2000, the starting point in trying to establish a common language, to define objectives and to render scientific and technological insight into the new methods for
protection and maintenance of inland water bodies in the best interests of environment and human life.
Hence the main goal is to promote a modern and broadly gauged approach in order to tackle these problems in a multidisciplinary framework, including law, biological, architectural, geological, agronomic,
hydraulic, hydrological sciences, with no limitations imposed by narrow specialization and cultural phobias, so that all these disciplines contribute optimally to the wise and balanced management of
environmental resources.
Methodologies, the instruments and the scale of investigation necessary to cope with each specific problems will be discussed, wishing that this can help to the identification of future scenarios and to
long term decisions for the sustainable use of
environmental resources.
Hoping to have you among the participants in Capri on June 2002 and apologizing for cross posting.
Best regards.
