Conference on introgression from GM plants into wild relatives Dear Colleagues, Hans den Nijs, one of the subscribers to the FAO e-mail conference on GMOs and Gene Flow that finished on 5 July, has requested that we post a short message about an upcoming conference he is helping to organise. While it is not our normal practice to post messages after a FAO Biotechnology Forum e-mail conference ends, we have decided to do so in this case because the theme is very similar to that of the FAO conference and since it comes just soon after the FAO conference. It is a conference organised by the European Science Foundation programme AIGM (Assessement of the Impact of Genitically Modified Plants), and entitled "Introgression from Genetically Modified Plants (GMP) into wild relatives and its consequences" and is to be held 21-24 January 2003, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. "This conference aims at reviewing current knowledge on gene flow and introgression, and discussing the research and monitoring information required to determine the consequences of introgression of novel genes on plant and crop ecosystems." See http://www.science.uva.nl/research/ibed/Introgression/ or contact Hans den Nijs (nijs@science.uva.nl) for further details. Joint Australia and New Zealand Institute of Forestry Conference Australasian Forestry - A Strategic Vision April 27 - May 1, 2003 Queenstown, New Zealand The Institutes of Forestry of Australia and New Zealand are pleased to announce a joint four-day conference to look at the breadth of issues impacting on forests and forestry management strategy into the future. ANZIF Conferences happen only every five or six years. They are always memorable events. The management of forests requires a long term and broad outlook, something that has not always been apparent over the last few decades, as forestry restructurings have sometimes compelled a short-term and narrow focus. The time is overdue for forestry managers to once again lift their eyes from todayÆs issues to the strategy of tomorrow. Voluntary and selected keynote papers contributing to the various sub-themes are being invited. Take the opportunity to have your say about forestry strategy, and what issues we must address. The conference will cover the following sub-themes throughout three days of papers, with parallel sessions. Ï The role of strategic planning in Australasian forestry management; À Selected Keynote speakers Ï International trade issues facing Australasian forestry; À Suggested paper topics: supply /demand (quality & quantity), trends, inventory, role of plantations vs ænaturalÆ forests, international finance Ï Management strategies and opportunities for our forests, and for forest products and services down the supply chain (double slot); À Suggested paper topics: quality, quantity, management treatment and trends, alternative species, research and opportunities, marketing, future of processing, innovations in processing, processing options and opportunities, processing integration and supply chain management, Natural forests vs. plantations, managing for future markets/uncertainty, inventory, Role of independent growers, physical and non-physical infrastructure, managing for business and financial risk, benefits and risks of diversity and options, forestry and other land uses, management paradigms (forests as æcapitalÆ, æcropsÆ, multiple uses, ecosystems, preserves). Ï Environmental issues in Australasian forestry; À Suggested paper topics: Certification, biosecurity, climate change & carbon, emerging trends Australasia & internationally, ecosystem management, role of natural forests and plantations in the environment, ecosystem services (non wood forest products û services and values) Ï Social issues in Australasian forestry; À Suggested paper topics: public participation, workforce, education & training, health and safety, public safety, public perceptions, indigenous people, the role of forestry in social development, land tenure, community forestry Ï The role of government; À Suggested paper topics: Forest history (for current perspective), forest policy issues and trends, national inventory, regional development, infrastructural development, social development, international protocols, legislation, tariffs and trade, log exporting, price controls, timber concessions. Ï The forestry profession's response to changing industry and social values; À Suggested paper topics: How is the profession responding to the restructuring of the industry and to the changing values of society? What are the emerging resource management values and approaches (e.g. æsustainable yieldÆ, æecosystem managementÆ æpreservationÆ)? Will there continue to be a forestry profession in 2020 and what role will there be for the Institutes? Ï Changing information, research and training requirement À Suggested paper topics: An examination of the training requirements of the industry (trade and professional). The role of research? Managing the links between research, policy and operational management. How will the research requirements of the industry alter into the future? Submission may be made with an abstract of between 200 and 400 words. Please indicate whether your abstract is for an oral or poster presentation. Consideration is also being given to post graduate student presentations. Timetable: 30 October, 2002 Deadline for presentation of abstracts 30 November, 2002 Notification of authors (and writing instructions) 31 January, 2003 Deadline for draft papers 28 February, 2003 Notification to authors for acceptance/refusal of papers 31 March, 2003 Deadline for final papers 27 April to 1 May, 2003 Conference Abstracts should be presented to the ANZIF 2003 Conference Review Committee, preferably in electronic format.

ForestSAT Symposium on Operational Tools in Forestry using Remote Sensing Techniques. Dear colleague , The British Forestry Commission is organising an international symposium next year in Edinburgh the 5th to the 9th of August 2002, to raise awareness about existing remote sensing technique tools between forest managers. This event intends to bring along those tools currently used worldwide and to show their potential application in European forestry. This symposium is partly funded by the EU LIFE programme FORESTSAFE, which covers the main organisation and the publication of the proceedings. In addition, we are planning parallel activities such as a one-day seminar about optical, radar and lidar systems with their possible applications in forestry; and exhibits with commercial products like software, data capture and consulting. After the symposium, we want to compile the most relevant applications in a peer-review publication. I would like to invite you formally to attend the ForestSAT symposium next year. Please see the official web site for more details: www.forestry.gov.uk/ForestSAT Best wishes, Juan Suarez Geographic Information Scientist Symposium convenor Objectives Remote sensing techniques have been developed over the last decades and nowadays some of them constitute important operational tools for forest management. Remote sensing methodologies are rapidly penetrating a number of application domains such as forest inventory, management of abiotic hazards, health monitoring, pollution control, timber extraction, production forecast, landscape architecture, the provision of recreation facilities and many others. In addition, remote sensing techniques are a valuable source of spatial information when combined with the Geographic Information Systems. Remote sensing data are extensively used in spatial models for decision support in forestry. The symposium programme intends to address all the remote sensing techniques such as aerial photography, radar, lidar, optical systems and thermography. Additionally, the workshop would like to invite solutions for primary data transfer including the use of the World Wide Web, data compression techniques, visualisation and mobile computing. Who should attends The purpose of the symposium is to show forestry managers, forest practitioners, policy makers, planners and scientists examples of operational tools developed from remote sensing techniques. The organisation of this symposium would like to bring together developers and users of these technologies into a common forum where both can be informed about the development and application of those tools regarded as operational. The symposium would also provide an opportunity for users to provide feedback about their requirements in future tool's developments. Benefits to you * Keep up-to-date on the latest advances and current operational systems in forest management * Present your applications to a wide audience * Collaborate with experts around the world * Publish your applications in a peer-reviewed book * Demonstration of applications in our exhibits International Scientific Committee Chairperson: Juan Suarez Shaun Quegan, UK Shane Cloude, UK Iain Woodhouse, UK Tim Malthus, UK Danny Donoghue, UK Erkki Tomppo, Finland Mats Nilsson, Sweden Mark Danson, UK Heiko Balzer, UK José Miguel Pereira, Portugal Emilio Chuvieco, Spain Barbara Koch, Germany Barry Gardiner, UK Paul Saich, UK Dirk Hoekman, Holland Steen Magnussen, Canada Craig Trotter, New Zealand Steven Franklin, Canada Call for papers Papers are invited on the topics outlined in the main areas of interest and others falling within the scope of the meeting.
