''Auditing the ark - science based monitoring of biodiversity'' Electronic Conference on 5th - 20th September 2002 Subscribe at: www.gencat.es/mediamb/bioplatform/subscribebpl.htm Dear colleagues, The European Platform for Biodiversity Research Strategy (EPBRS), the Danish Biodiversity Platform and the BioPlatform Thematic Network invite you to participate in the electronic conference: ''Auditing the ark - science based monitoring of biodiversity'' which will run from 5th to 20th September 2002. Monitoring is an essential element of any strategy for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. Although decisions to take actions to conserve biodiversity rarely follow long-term monitoring of biodiversity they are, at least, based on some assessment of trends in biodiversity. However, potential threats to biodiversity, particularly land use and climate change, mean that decisions on actions to conserve biodiversity should increasingly be based on monitoring. Once actions are taken, monitoring is needed to measure the success, or otherwise, of these actions, and, when relevant, to identify the need for new or additional actions. But where is monitoring needed most? How can monitoring be most efficiently done? How can research help? The aims of the electronic conference are: To identify the major reasons for monitoring biodiversity. To discuss some existing and planned biodiversity monitoring programmes, identifying their strengths and weaknesses. To identify some developments in monitoring biodiversity and the advantages they offer. To discuss the development of a core programme of biodiversity monitoring across Europe; what are the priorities for monitoring and what major gaps exist? To identify where research should be focussed to develop monitoring programmes that best meet the needs of users, including the development of a core programme of biodiversity monitoring across Europe? The electronic conference is developed within the framework of the BioPlatform project (www.bioplatform.info), a thematic network of scientists and policy-makers who aim at improving the effectiveness and relevance of biodiversity research in Europe. A sister electronic conference, focusing on marine aspects of the issues identified above, will take place in parallel with the BioPlatform one announced here. This parallel conference is run by the thematic network called MARBENA. Subscription information can be found http://www.vliz.be/marbena/. The results of both Electronic Conferences will be presented at the EPBRS delegates meeting in Silkeborg, Denmark 4-6th October 2002. The BioPlatform electronic conference will be chaired by Allan Watt, Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, UK. You may subscribe to the electronic conference by filling the Subscription form available at the following address: www.gencat.es/mediamb/bioplatform/subscribebpl.htm or by sending an e-mail to Aniol Esteban, e-conference manager, janiol@eresmas.net We would appreciate your kind help in forwarding this announcement to anyone who might be interested.
