Conference on introgression from GM plants into wild relatives
Dear Colleagues, Hans den Nijs, one of the subscribers to the
FAO e-mail conference on GMOs and Gene Flow that finished on 5
July, has requested that we post a short message about an
upcoming conference he is helping to organise. While it is not
our normal practice to post messages after a FAO Biotechnology
Forum e-mail conference ends, we have decided to do so in this
case because the theme is very similar to that of the FAO
conference and since it comes just soon after the FAO
conference. It is a conference organised by the European Science
Foundation programme AIGM (Assessement of the Impact of
Genitically Modified Plants), and entitled "Introgression
from Genetically Modified Plants (GMP) into wild relatives and
its consequences" and is to be held 21-24 January 2003,
University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. "This conference
aims at reviewing current knowledge on gene flow and
introgression, and discussing the research and monitoring
information required to determine the consequences of
introgression of novel genes on plant and crop ecosystems."
See http://www.science.uva.nl/research/ibed/Introgression/ or

Joint Australia and New Zealand Institute of Forestry Conference
Australasian Forestry - A Strategic Vision April 27 - May 1,
2003 Queenstown, New Zealand The Institutes of Forestry of
Australia and New Zealand are pleased to announce a joint
four-day conference to look at the breadth of issues impacting
on forests and forestry management strategy into the future.
ANZIF Conferences happen only every five or six years. They are
always memorable events. The management of forests requires a
long term and broad outlook, something that has not always been
apparent over the last few decades, as forestry restructurings
have sometimes compelled a short-term and narrow focus. The time
is overdue for forestry managers to once again lift their eyes
from todayÆs issues to the strategy of tomorrow. Voluntary and
selected keynote papers contributing to the various sub-themes
are being invited. Take the opportunity to have your say about
forestry strategy, and what issues we must address. The
conference will cover the following sub-themes throughout three
days of papers, with parallel sessions. Ï The role of strategic
planning in Australasian forestry management; À Selected
Keynote speakers Ï International trade issues facing
Australasian forestry; À Suggested paper topics: supply /demand
(quality & quantity), trends, inventory, role of plantations
vs ænaturalÆ forests, international finance Ï Management
strategies and opportunities for our forests, and for forest
products and services down the supply chain (double slot); À
Suggested paper topics: quality, quantity, management treatment
and trends, alternative species, research and opportunities,
marketing, future of processing, innovations in processing,
processing options and opportunities, processing integration and
supply chain management, Natural forests vs. plantations,
managing for future markets/uncertainty, inventory, Role of
independent growers, physical and non-physical infrastructure,
managing for business and financial risk, benefits and risks of
diversity and options, forestry and other land uses, management
paradigms (forests as æcapitalÆ, æcropsÆ, multiple uses,
ecosystems, preserves). Ï Environmental issues in Australasian
forestry; À Suggested paper topics: Certification, biosecurity,
climate change & carbon, emerging trends Australasia &
internationally, ecosystem management, role of natural forests
and plantations in the environment, ecosystem services (non wood
forest products û services and values) Ï Social issues in
Australasian forestry; À Suggested paper topics: public
participation, workforce, education & training, health and
safety, public safety, public perceptions, indigenous people,
the role of forestry in social development, land tenure,
community forestry Ï The role of government; À Suggested paper
topics: Forest history (for current perspective), forest policy
issues and trends, national inventory, regional development,
infrastructural development, social development, international
protocols, legislation, tariffs and trade, log exporting, price
controls, timber concessions. Ï The forestry profession's
response to changing industry and social values; À Suggested
paper topics: How is the profession responding to the
restructuring of the industry and to the changing values of
society? What are the emerging resource management values and
approaches (e.g. æsustainable yieldÆ, æecosystem managementÆ
æpreservationÆ)? Will there continue to be a forestry
profession in 2020 and what role will there be for the
Institutes? Ï Changing information, research and training
requirement À Suggested paper topics: An examination of the
training requirements of the industry (trade and professional).
The role of research? Managing the links between research,
policy and operational management. How will the research
requirements of the industry alter into the future? Submission
may be made with an abstract of between 200 and 400 words.
Please indicate whether your abstract is for an oral or poster
presentation. Consideration is also being given to post graduate
student presentations. Timetable: 30 October, 2002 Deadline for
presentation of abstracts 30 November, 2002 Notification of
authors (and writing instructions) 31 January, 2003 Deadline for
draft papers 28 February, 2003 Notification to authors for
acceptance/refusal of papers 31 March, 2003 Deadline for final
papers 27 April to 1 May, 2003 Conference Abstracts should be

''Auditing the ark - science based monitoring of biodiversity''
Electronic Conference on 5th - 20th September 2002 Subscribe at:
www.gencat.es/mediamb/bioplatform/subscribebpl.htm Dear
colleagues, The European Platform for Biodiversity Research
Strategy (EPBRS), the Danish Biodiversity Platform and the
BioPlatform Thematic Network invite you to participate in the
electronic conference: ''Auditing the ark - science based
monitoring of biodiversity'' which will run from 5th to 20th
September 2002. Monitoring is an essential element of any
strategy for the conservation and sustainable use of
biodiversity. Although decisions to take actions to conserve
biodiversity rarely follow long-term monitoring of biodiversity
they are, at least, based on some assessment of trends in
biodiversity. However, potential threats to biodiversity,
particularly land use and climate change, mean that decisions on
actions to conserve biodiversity should increasingly be based on
monitoring. Once actions are taken, monitoring is needed to
measure the success, or otherwise, of these actions, and, when
relevant, to identify the need for new or additional actions.
But where is monitoring needed most? How can monitoring be most
efficiently done? How can research help? The aims of the
electronic conference are: To identify the major reasons for
monitoring biodiversity. To discuss some existing and planned
biodiversity monitoring programmes, identifying their strengths
and weaknesses. To identify some developments in monitoring
biodiversity and the advantages they offer. To discuss the
development of a core programme of biodiversity monitoring
across Europe; what are the priorities for monitoring and what
major gaps exist? To identify where research should be focussed
to develop monitoring programmes that best meet the needs of
users, including the development of a core programme of
biodiversity monitoring across Europe? The electronic conference
is developed within the framework of the BioPlatform project
(www.bioplatform.info), a thematic network of scientists and
policy-makers who aim at improving the effectiveness and
relevance of biodiversity research in Europe. A sister
electronic conference, focusing on marine aspects of the issues
identified above, will take place in parallel with the
BioPlatform one announced here. This parallel conference is run
by the thematic network called MARBENA. Subscription information
can be found http://www.vliz.be/marbena/. The results of both
Electronic Conferences will be presented at the EPBRS delegates
meeting in Silkeborg, Denmark 4-6th October 2002. The
BioPlatform electronic conference will be chaired by Allan Watt,
Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, UK. You may subscribe to the
electronic conference by filling the Subscription form available

The Forestry Research Institute of Sweden Invites to an
International Conference + + 2nd Forest Engineering Conference
12-15 May 2003, Växjö, Sweden + + - from forest to mill - from
hardware to software - from human relations to organizational
development - from research to implementation * A conference for
practitioners, scientists and developers o Field demonstrations
in southern Sweden For more information, please visit the
website on http://www.skogforsk.se/fec. *About the conference*
Awareness of the relationship between operational efficiency and
business success has grown rapidly. Cost efficient forest
operations are recognized worldwide to be one of the major
prerequisites for the forest industry to stay in business. At
the same time, safeguarding biodiversity and regenerating new,
healthy, valuable forests is a must. We have to continuously
adjust our operational methods and systems to changing forest
management practises. We also need to apply the latest
technology to perform and support the chain of activities from
the forests to the end users of our products. Furthermore the
technical and organizational development in the forestry sector
must go hand-in-hand. The growing interest in forest engineering
was successfully demonstrated at the 1st FEC in Scotland in
1999. SkogForsk has proudly accepted the responsibility for the
2nd FEC to be held in Sweden in 2003. The objective of the FEC
is to present and discuss the state-of-the-art both in practice
and R&D within a variety of disciplines related to forest
operations. The 2nd FEC also offers a great opportunity for you
to meet colleagues and to help create a global network for
forest engineering. The conference addresses o Researchers as
well as developers in forestry and equipment manufacturing, and
o Staff personnel in forestry companies and contractors.
