Il campus è situato a 5 km a sud di Uppsala ed è collegato all'aeroporto e al centro cittadino da frequenti corse d'autobus. Dispone di sale da 80 a 550 posti con dotazioni audio-video complete, parcheggi gratuiti e due ristoranti che possono sevire 1000 persone. Uppsala, la capitale culturale della Svezia, è situata 80 km a nord di Stoccolma, 35 km a nord dell'aeroporto internazionale Stoccolma-Arlanda, 35 minuti con treno o bus navetta. Uppsala è la quarta maggiore città svedese; ha due università e oltre 40.000 studenti e 4.000 ricercatori. La città inoltre ospita più di 300 imprese nei settori dei prodotti farmaceutici, delle apparecchiature elettromedicali, della tecnologia dell'informazione, della scienza dei materiali, della bio-informatica e dell'ingegneria genetica. L'Agenzia per i Prodotti Medici, l'Amministrazione Alimentare Nazionale e l'Istituto Veterinario Nazionale hanno sede in città. The European Forest Institute (EFI) and The Finnish Forest Research Institute develop methods to calculate forest carbon budgets. The institutes are seeking TWO RESEARCHERS for their projects on this topic. The posts will involve - data analyses - development and testing of forest models - development of methods to assess uncertainties in the estimates of forest carbon budgets - reporting research results to the scientific community and other users of the information The applicants should have a master's degree in an appropriate field. We appreciate eagerness to learn, ability to solve problems alone as well as with the research team, and writing and presentation skills. Practising post graduate studies is possible. One researcher will be hired from 1.3.2002 until 28.2.2004 at the Headquarters of the European Forest Institute in Joensuu and the other from 1.3.2002 until 31.8.2003 at the Finnish Forest Research Institute in Vantaa Research Center. Caro Collega, spero di fare cosa gradita nell' inviarti in formato PDF la locandina ed in formato Word la presentazione del XII Congresso della Societa' Italiana d i Ecologia che si terra' in Urbino, presso la Facolta' di Scienze Ambientali da l 16 al 18 settembre 2002. Il tema del congresso e' "La complessita' in ecologia", un tema che offre numerose possibilita' di interventi e di dibattiti. Per questo presto sul sito del Congresso: Ecologia2002.it apparira' uno spazio dedicato ad un forum. Saranno indicati temi e tutti noi potremmo intervenire via web per discuterli in preparazione degli incontri e delle tavole rotonde durante i lavori del congresso. ForestSAT Symposium on Operational Tools in Forestry using Remote Sensing Techniques. Dear colleague , The British Forestry Commission is organising an international symposium next year in Edinburgh the 5th to the 9th of August 2002, to raise awareness about existing remote sensing technique tools between forest managers. This event intends to bring along those tools currently used worldwide and to show their potential application in European forestry. This symposium is partly funded by the EU LIFE programme FORESTSAFE, which covers the main organisation and the publication of the proceedings. In addition, we are planning parallel activities such as a one-day seminar about optical, radar and lidar systems with their possible applications in forestry; and exhibits with commercial products like software, data capture and consulting. Remote sensing methodologies are rapidly penetrating a number of application domains such as forest inventory, management of abiotic hazards, health monitoring, pollution control, timber extraction, production forecast, landscape architecture, the provision of recreation facilities and many others. In addition, remote sensing techniques are a valuable source of spatial information when combined with the Geographic Information Systems. Remote sensing data are extensively used in spatial models for decision support in forestry. The symposium programme intends to address all the remote sensing techniques such as aerial photography, radar, lidar, optical systems and thermography. Additionally, the workshop would like to invite solutions for primary data transfer including the use of the World Wide Web, data compression techniques, visualisation and mobile computing. Who should attends The purpose of the symposium is to show forestry managers, forest practitioners, policy makers, planners and scientists examples of operational tools developed from remote sensing techniques. The organisation of this symposium would like to bring together developers and users of these technologies into a common forum where both can be informed about the development and application of those tools regarded as operational. The symposium would also provide an opportunity for users to provide feedback about their requirements in future tool's developments. The first Air Pollution Workshop was held in 1969 at the Pennsylvania State University. The purpose of the Workshop was to provide an opportunity for scientists and other interested individuals (such as government and industry representatives) to meet and discuss current research and priorities for future air pollution effects research on an annual basis. The original concept was to keep the Workshop informal to facilitate both communication and cooperation between the interested scientists. Over the years the Workshop has retained its informal atmosphere and the philosophy of an open and informal forum to discuss ongoing and future research. In April 2002, the 34th Air Pollution Workshop will be hosted by Pennsylvania State University, which will provide an informal setting for presentations and discussion of current research topics and issues of various aspects of air pollution effects on agricultural crops, forests and natural ecosystems. In recent years, in addition to air pollution research, issues related to climate change effects have also become part of the scope of the Workshop. Topics such as CO2 enrichment, temperature changes, UV-B radiation, drought and their effects on vegetation have been presented and discussed. Of particular interests are interactions of global climate changes with more regional effects of pollutants, especially ozone and nitrogen deposition. Also issues related to evaluation of risks associated with air pollution in natural and anthropogenically-changed systems have become part of the Workshop discussions. The 20th International Meeting for Specialists in Air Pollution Effects on Forest Ecosystems will be held at the Forest Research Institute, T. G. Masaryka 22, Zvolen, Slovakia. Investigation of the effects of air pollution on forests in a changing environment has quickly developed in the last decades. Data on forest ecosystems long-term exposure to pollutants are now available. This Meeting is an opportunity to review the state-of-the-art, and to suggest improvements and identify priorities for such investigations in the 21st century. The last meetings of the IUFRO Working Group 7.04.00 Air Pollution Impacts on Forest Ecosystems were held in Houghton, USA, 2000, in Edinburgh, U.K., 1998, in Florence, Italy, 1996 and in Fredericton, Canada, 1994. The aim of the Meetings is to bring together scientists, who are involved in the research on the effects of pollutants on trees and forests. General lectures, which review the current state-of-the-art, will be given. Participants are encouraged to give a short oral presentation or to present a poster. The main topics are: * Problems in Diagnosis, Monitoring and Evaluation of Air Pollution Effects; * Restoration and Sustanaible Management of Forests in Polluted Areas: Historical Experience and Current Practices, Economic Assessment; * Impact of Climatic Changes on Forests and Air Pollution Effect and Genetics.

The workshop represents the main opportunity to introduce new Ozone Critical Levels II into the revision of the Gothenburg Protocol 2004/2005. The overall aim of the workshop is to recommend new texts for the Ozone Critical Level II approach for the Mapping Manual. The primary aims of the workshop are: * To review recent progress in the fields of ozone exposure–response relationships for vegetation and ozone exposure modelling and mapping; * To suggest ozone exposure–response relation-ships for agricultural crops, natural vegetation and forest trees, based on the most recent available knowledge. *To suggest specific changes in the text of the Mapping Manual concerning critical levels for ozone. The UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre, in collaboration with the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office, has the honour to offer six UNEP-WCMC Chevening Scholarships in Biodiversity, beginning September 2002. The scheme will draw scholars from all regions of the world to work for one year at the Centre in Cambridge. They will analyse an aspect of biodiversity conservation and sustainable management relevant to the policy needs of their region. This will contribute to various UNEP global assessments and support the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity and other environmental agreements. Aims: This scheme aims to help young researchers to prepare for a role in national and regional policy development and decision-making to resolve biodiversity-related challenges. With support from the Centre’s staff they will select a subject for analysis and publish recommendations for action over a period of one year, from September 2002. Eligibility: One scholar will be drawn from each of six regions: Africa, Asia & the Pacific, Europe, Latin America & the Caribbean, North America, and West Asia. Candidates must be under 35 years of age, be fluent in English (IELTS band 7 or above), hold a good degree, and preferably also a postgraduate degree, in a biological or environmental science. The Centre does not award formal qualifications and the scheme is not primarily intended for those seeking higher degrees. Funding: Each scholarship is currently worth £8,812 per annum, including all allowances (under review). In addition one economy class air fare to and from the UK will be paid and a small sum is available for local travel. The UK Chevening Scholarships Programme and private sector sponsors support the scheme. Subject areas: Applicants are free to propose biodiversity-related subjects of particular interest to their region, and successful candidates will be encouraged to bring supporting information resources. However, potential subjects currently of interest to UNEP-WCMC include: great apes and bushmeat; aquarium trade; conservation of sharks and turtles; transboundary protected areas; dryland conservation; tourism & biodiversity; climate change and conservation policy; and mountain conservation. All studies will be based in Cambridge and there will be no opportunities for fieldwork. PROGRAMMA: Il convegno si terra' Giovedi' 14 Febbraio 2002 alle ore 14 nella Sala delle Conferenze del CNR e sara' preceduto da una breve conferenza stampa. A coordinare l'incontro sara' Roberto Defez (IIGB-CNR, Napoli), che insieme a Francesco Sala (Universita' di Milano), Eugenio Benvenuto (ENEA, Roma) e GianTommaso Scarascia-Mugnozza (Presidente dell'Accademia delle Scienze), fara' un bilancio dei progressi e dei problemi che si sono evidenziati nell'anno trascorso dal convegno di San Macuto. Hanno già dato la loro adesione Umberto Veronesi, Edoardo Boncinelli , Carlo Alberto Redi, Tullio Regge, Paolo Costantino, Riccardo Cortese, Marco Paolo Nuti, Gennaro Marino, Andrea Ballabio, Pablo Amati, Silvio Garattini, Luigi Monti, Luciano Caglioti, Ida Ruberti, Giuliano d'Agnolo, Mauro Cresti, Chris Bowler,
Giuseppe Rotino, Bruno Mezzetti, Piero Morandini, Giorgio Morelli, Mirella Sari Gorla, Angelo Viotti, Elisabetta Lupotto e Chiara Tonelli. Il convegno prevede inoltre due lezioni magistrali da parte di due grandi nomi del settore agrobiotecnologico: Ingo Potrykus (ETH, Zurigo) e Channapatna Prakash (Tuskegee University). Ingo Potrykus, noto a tutti come il padre del golden rice, illustrera' le potenzialita' del riso arricchito di pro-vitamina A e di ferro per combattere le deficienze nutrizionali nei paesi in via di sviluppo, raccontando la storia del suo progetto di ricerca decennale che si e' scontrato con l'agguerrita opposizione delle organizzazioni
ambientaliste e con la fitta rete di protezioni brevettuali nelle mani di istituti pubblici e privati. Potrykus fara' il punto sui lavori attualmente in corso all'International Rice Research Institute (Filippine) per trasferire i geni del golden rice nelle varieta' di riso piu' adatte per il sud del mondo. Channapatna Prakash parlera' nella sua duplice veste di ricercatore e di comunicatore, infatti oltre a lavorare allo sviluppo di patate ad alto contenuto proteico e a fare parte dell'Agricultural Biotechnology Advisory Committe dell'USDA e dell'Advisory Committee for the Department of Biotechnology del Governo Indiano, ha lanciato il piu' grande appello internazionale a sostegno delle biotecnologie agricole. Attraverso il suo sito-web svolge una preziosa attivita' di promozione del dibattito sugli OGM e ha lavorato per promuovere la ricerca biotecnologica in Asia e Africa. Prakash illustrerà quale ruolo possono svolgere le biotecnologie per la food security e discutera' i malintesi che hanno condizionato tanto pesantemente il dibattito pubblico sugli OGM negli ultimi anni.

For many years the tropical forest ecosystem has been subject of debate at
all levels of society, ranging from environmental NGOs, scientists and
policy makers, to high level international Conventions and Agreements.
Global warming, depletion of natural resources, violation of indigenous
peoples' rights, biodiversity loss and soil degradation are major concerns
affecting tropical forests.
Voices have been raised to protect tropical forests because of their great
value for mankind including their potential to contribute to poverty
alleviation. But what exactly is this value of tropical forests? Tropical
forests sustain a wealth of biodiversity, provide a wide range of
ecosystems, services and products, and support livelihoods for millions of
people. But if these biological, economic and social values are acknowledged
why are forests continuously being depleted? To what extent have appropriate
valuation and market mechanisms been developed and implemented? Could they

Tropenbos International (TBI) is organising a two-day seminar to discuss
forest values, and to support the development and implementation of
appropriate financing mechanisms for the conservation and sustainable use of
tropical forests. During this seminar a bridge between policy, management
and research will be constructed through debate. Science will state facts,
interpretation by the different societal players will differ and current
concepts might be challenged. Politicians, policy makers, scientists, NGO's
