Fourth
International Workshop on Bioavailability "Bioavailability of pollutants and
soil remediation"
September 10-13, 2006
Sevilla, Spain
The main objective of the workshop is to identify research needs in the bioavailability of xenobiotics in soil-based ecosystems. Research performed during the last 15 years has evidenced that the risk from heavy metals and organic chemicals introduced into soils is strongly influenced by bioavailability: Risk assessments based on total concentrations are leading to overestimation of exposure. This incorrect assessment of risk from pollutants has profound social and economical implications, affecting, for example, production technology, soil management, and soil remediation. In spite of this advancement, still exists a lack of prediction capacity of the reduction in bioavailability based upon characteristics of the chemicals, the soils and the target organisms, or how bioavailability of chemicals affects soil quality, and appropriate assays are still needed to determine bioavailability. The workshop will provide the opportunity for scientists to intensify the exchange of knowledge and experience, and will allow collaboration between researchers in different related disciplines, including chemistry, molecular biology, risk assessment and soil technology.

International and European Symposium on Environmental Biotechnology
2006 (ISEB/ESEB 2006)
July 9-13, 2006
Leipzig, Germany
The "global village" relies on one common environment (air, water, land) transcending national boundaries. Growing concern on protection and restoration of environmental quality demands technologies for the prevention of polluting releases and the treatment of extant pollution.
Biotechnology offers natural ways for making industrial processes work more efficiently, create less pollution, and provide biological replacements for synthetic chemicals. Environmental biotechnology is the way to address environmental problems ranging from the identification and monitoring of biohazards to bioremediation techniques for industrial, agricultural and municipal effluents and residues. Control of relevant environmental processes requires understanding of natural processes, profound engineering expertise, prospective environmental regulations and resource management strategies to tackle the global challenges identified for this decade. Application of molecular methodologies may provide avenues to more sustainable, efficient solutions to environmental problems.
If you are interested in giving a lecture or in presenting a poster referring to one of the topics, please send your abstract written in English before 30 November 2005. All abstracts submitted will be carefully reviewed by the scientific committee.

Second International Symposium on
Trace Elements and Minerals in Medicine and Biology
13-15 May 2004
Neuherberg - Munich, Germany
The determination of trace elements has gained outstanding importance in the
life sciences. Elements present even at minimal concentrations in biological
and environmental matrices, in fact, can exert fundamental influence on vital
functions proportionally to their amounts. However, during the last two decades
analytical chemists increasingly realized that total concentrations of chemical
elements cannot give, in general, information about mobility, bioavailability
and the eventual impact of elements on ecological systems and biological
organisms. Only the knowledge of the chemical species of the elements can
provide an understanding of chemical and biochemical reactions and thus lead to
more information about toxicity or essentiality. It is also worth stressing, in
this context that new trace elements are being added to the list of those that
are known or suspected to be essential.
Our intention for the Speciation Conference is to provide a highly qualified
platform for all activities in element speciation and to create a form for open
discussions about very new and perhaps not fully established findings.
Abstracts should be submitted not later than November 15, 2003.

Bioavailability of Soil Pollutants
and Risk Assessment
2nd International Workshop, February 2-7, 2003
CSF, Monte Verita, Ascona, Switzerland
Bioavailability of soil pollutants is
one of the key factors in risk
assessment. This workshop will discuss
new developments in
the research of bioavailability but also
how this can be
transferred to practical applications in
risk assessment and
management of soil pollution. Subject
areas covered include
abiotic and biotic factors controlling
pollutant bioavailability,
dependence of toxicity and ecotoxicity
risks on bioavailability,
measuring and modelling the
bioavailability of soil
contaminants and prospects for
quantitative risk assessment,
characterization of bioavailability for
risk assessment and
measures to control bioavailability for
risk management. One of
the main goals of the workshop is also
to bring researchers
working in bioavailability together with
practitioners and
regulators which are influential in the
practical implementation
of new concepts in the treatment of soil
pollution.
Call for Papers and Submission guidelines: The total number of
participants is limited to 80. Oral and poster contributions are invited on
topics within the scope of the workshop. Approximately 30 oral and 50 poster
presentations can be accomodated. Deadline: September 30

The 9th New Phytologist Symposium on
Heavy metals and plants
from ecosystems to
biomolecules
University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USA
29 September - 1 October 2002
There is burgeoning interest and research activity in the field of
heavy metal tolerance and toxicity in plants. Until the last few
years, research had been conducted principally at the
physiological, genetic and ecological levels. The relatively recent
application of molecular and biochemical approaches to this field
has, however, had a dramatic impact on our understanding of the
mechanisms underlying heavy metal accumulation and
detoxification. This progress has occurred in parallel with more
conventional approaches, which have continued to yield
fascinating insights. New Phytologist has developed and
maintained the healthy position of publishing some of the best
papers on plants and heavy metals.
