The first four congresses (between 1980 and 1990) were structured as concurrent symposia of the Society working groups; the symposia were focused on major ecological themes and applications: ecosystems, biogeochemical cycling, primary production, secondary production, decomposition and microbial ecology, ecotoxicology, population genetics and ecology, behavioural ecology, bioindicators, radioecology, soil ecology, environmental impact evaluation.Successively, congresses have been organised to address emerging environmental issues.
